The SUMED Project presented in Amsterdam

Milla Järvipetäjä,  from Turku University of Applied Sciences, presented the  achievements and finds of the SUMED project at Creative Skills Week 2024 in Amsterdam. Their presentation focused on rethinking the role of universities in achieving sustainability goals within media education and media production processes, aiming to prevent further harm to human well-being and the environment. They also highlighted SUMED activities, including redesigning the curriculum and course materials to integrate sustainability principles, and transforming the learning environment through the creation of course pilots and corresponding settings. The ultimate goal is to establish a sustainable framework for media production, incorporating well-being skills and workload management competencies. Three presentations in Spain about SUMED

Julio González Liendo  from the Universitat Politècnica de València conducted a four-hour academic session on the Master’s Degree in Cultural Management titled "Sustainability in the training of new generations of communicators". The session, attended by 40 students from the Universitat de València and the Universitat Politècnica de València, focused on the pivotal role of communication in advancing sustainability within museum institutions. The session was led by Julio González Liendo with the support of Prof Nuria Lloret Romero, combining theoretical insights with practical applications to explore how communication strategies should be integrated into the exercise of museum sustainability. A key highlight of the course was the introduction of the Huella M methodology—a comprehensive tool designed for measuring, managing, and reporting sustainability efforts. Through this methodology, students were able to understand the integral role communication plays across all stages of the sustainability process. This includes the formulation of sustainability plans, the implementation of Huella M, the preparation of detailed reports, and leveraging communication to amplify the reach and impact of sustainable practices. Julio González Liendo also  presented at the III International Congress on New Media Technological Opportunities, organised by Rey Juan Carlos University in Madrid. Addressing an audience of professors, researchers, and students specializng in communication, journalism, and corporate reputation, he shared the outcomes of WP3 from the European SUMED project. In his presentation, González Liendo emphasized how courses, workshops, and conferences conducted by the SUMED team have underscored the critical need for programmatic content and evaluation tools to support educators in integrating sustainability into their curricula. He also outlined the project's next steps, which include piloting sustainability-focused content in communication schools and faculties. The presentation sparked interest among attending professors, who expressed a keen desire to access the results of these pilot initiatives. (October)

Mr González Liendo also presented on November 15, 2024 at the VI International Congress of Specialized Communication, Julio González Liendo presented the WP3 results obtained at the Polytechnic University of Valencia through training exercises with professors who will lead the SUMED pilots. He also detailed the ongoing process developed by the project’s partner universities and outlined the next steps to leverage insights from professors and students gathered across the SUMED work packages. The event, attended by professors, students, and communication professionals, sparked significant interest, leading the congress organizers to request a presentation of the project’s 2025 results.
