Sustainable Multidimensional Media Contents

About SUMED

We, the SUMED partners, have embeded sustainability into educational and production processes to prevent further harm to human well-being and the environment. Overall, the entire media supply chain of the production should be as sustainable as possible.  This can be best ensured by incorporating sustainability criteria into the education of the future media professionals, focusing on both the topic and the associated ways of thinking. The development of new and improved curricula and courses contribute to local communities and organizations that offer internships for students and support the skills of their new employees.

We, as educators,  design and redesign media curricula and thus consequently, meet the new needs and increase awareness of sustainability culture in media courses in HEIs as per Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS) such as sustainable journalism, sustainable social media marketing and digital marketing, sustainable advertising, sustainable public relations and media relations, sustainable media communication, sustainable scriptwriting and audiovisual expression, sustainable video production at both the Bachelor’s and Master’s levels. This can be best ensured by incorporating sustainability criteria into the education of the future media professionals, focusing on both the topic and the associated ways of thinking.

The SUMED project conducts training sessions for educators, offers courses for students, and provides support and inspiration for curriculum re-design to meet new needs.

SUMED introduces the “teaching excellence” concept to media teachers at higher education level and motivates them to (1) develop updated digital competencies, (2) support the application of sustainable working methods, including the engagement of diversity, occupational health, and carbon-conscious media content creation, (3) to integrate new knowledge into their teaching practices. The green alternatives embedded into the piloted and researched media curricula, media course designs, and tools serve as models for career-oriented learning media environments in all participating countries. The teaching excellence is achieved in three key research areas:

1. Adapting to constantly changing media formats sustainably.

2. Facilitating a green transition in media work.

3. Promoting sustainable practices in media production.

By the means of:

• Refining teachers' sustainable knowledge in ever-evolving digital media.

• Improving teachers' competencies in navigating a carbon-conscious environment.

• Elevating teachers' expertise in occupational health through improved awareness.
